2006 / Enabling stereo output on the Apple MacBook

Stereo output on the Apple MacBook on Debian GNU/Linux

It seems like the default ALSA setting for the macbook's audio driver mutes the left channel, so you will get right-only output. This may not be relevant for your usual pop songs, but is for songs that eventually make use of stereo capabilities of modern sound hardware (hehe..).

Enabling the left output channel

I'm using Debian Etch, with Linux Kernel 2.6.17-2-686. To get the left channel working, I have to enable "Line In as Output" and then get output on both channels. Hint: If you enable "IEC958", this enables the optical output in your headphone jack.
